Homeopathy is system of medicine that has been around for well over 200 years. It is based on the premise that disease states can be cured by taking tiny amounts of substances which, in large amounts would lead to those very symptoms. "Like cures Like". A simple example of this is coffee. This can cause restlessness and sleeplessness. When used homeopathically it could be used to treat people with these symptoms. In Homeopathy we use these tiny amounts to stimulate the body's own healing systems. This is in contrast to modern medicine which uses drugs to change the chemical balances within the body.
Homeopathy is a holistic approach to health and wellbeing. It considers how the whole person reacts to stresses of all kinds and how this results in states of susceptibility and disease. It views all symptoms, whether mental, emotional or physical, as being part of the whole picture of the disease rather than being separate and independent of each other. It addresses the overall disturbance or imbalance within the body rather than simply focussing on individual symptoms.
The remedies used come from a wide variety of sources; plant, animal, mineral and chemical. Because very tiny amounts are used they are non-toxic and have no side effects. They can be used by people at any time of their life, from pregnant women and young babies to teenagers, adults and the elderly. They are usually given in small pills or liquid form. The length of time of any treatment depends on the individual, how long the symptoms have been present, the complexity of the case, and the number and strength of obstructions to cure such as lifestyle, pollution, diet and drugs. Some deep seated conditions and pathology will not clear up. Homeopathic remedies can be used alongside modern medicine.
Although science doesn't yet understand how the remedies work, there is a growing resource of peer reviewed scientific articles which show that it does work and how ultra-high dilutions of substances have biological effects. The Society of Homeopaths website contains a summary of much of this research. The Homeopathy Research Institute carries out research into ultra-high dilutions and collates current research.
